Spring 1: Captain Caveman!

This half term promises an exciting and enriching learning experience, with pupils engaging in hands-on activities, discussions, and creative projects across all subjects. In English, they will explore Stone Age Boy and Stone Age to Iron Age, developing their comprehension, narrative writing, and non-fiction report skills. Maths will focus on multiplication and division, strengthening fluency in times tables and problem-solving. In Science, pupils will investigate different types of rocks, fossil formation, and soil composition through practical experiments. History will take them on a journey from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, exploring early human survival, settlements, and technological advancements. In Religious Education, they will examine the significance of the Jewish people and the synagogue, while PSHE will encourage respect for their dreams and goals.

English

This half term, Year 3 pupils will delve into the prehistoric past through their core texts, Stone Age Boy and Stone Age to Iron Age (Non-fiction). They will develop their reading comprehension skills by identifying key themes, summarising information, and making predictions about the texts. As part of their writing journey, they will focus on comparing characters, sequencing events, and writing non-fiction reports. Pupils will learn how to organise information using subheadings, bullet points, and formal language while also developing their storytelling skills by writing narratives inspired by the Stone Age. Grammar lessons will concentrate on the use of adverbs to describe actions, imperative verbs in instructional writing, and ensuring correct subject-verb agreement in sentences. Speaking and listening activities will include group discussions about prehistoric life, role-playing scenes from Stone Age Boy, and presenting findings on Stone Age discoveries.

Maths

In Mathematics, pupils will focus on multiplication and division, strengthening their fluency in recalling the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10 times tables. They will explore equal groups, repeated addition, and arrays to develop a conceptual understanding of multiplication. Using number lines and bar models, they will represent and solve multiplication and division problems. Pupils will also learn formal written methods for both operations and apply their knowledge to solve real-world two-step problems. They will be encouraged to articulate their reasoning, explaining problem-solving strategies using mathematical vocabulary to deepen their understanding.

Science

Science lessons will take pupils on an exciting exploration of rocks. They will learn to classify different types of rocks—sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic—based on their physical properties. Through hands-on investigations, they will test the durability and permeability of rocks, simulating real-life experiments conducted by geologists. Pupils will also study how fossils are formed, linking their learning to the work of palaeontologists. Additionally, they will explore the composition of soil, understanding its role in plant growth and the environment. By engaging in scientific enquiry, they will develop their observation, recording, and analysis skills.

History

This half term, Year 3 pupils will embark on an exciting historical journey, exploring how Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. They will begin by learning about early humans during the Palaeolithic period, when people lived as hunter-gatherers, relying on nature for survival. Pupils will investigate how these early humans used simple stone, wood, and bone tools to hunt animals, gather plants, and build shelters. They will consider the daily challenges people faced in a world without modern conveniences, exploring how humans learned to make fire and how this discovery transformed their ability to cook food, stay warm, and protect themselves from predators. Moving into the Mesolithic period, pupils will study how small groups of people began to settle in one place for longer periods, developing more advanced tools and beginning to domesticate animals. This shift in lifestyle set the foundation for the Neolithic period, when farming became a key part of human life.

Design & Technology

In this Design Technology unit on Captain Caveman, students will explore the fascinating world of Palaeolithic art and design. They will begin by investigating the types of art created by early humans, before designing beads for Palaeolithic-style jewellery. The unit will then focus on the properties of clay and various joining techniques, which students will apply to create their own clay beads. Students will also learn about colour mixing to paint their creations in traditional Palaeolithic colours, bringing their designs to life. To conclude, they will evaluate their products, reflecting on their work and the processes involved in creating their jewellery.

RE

In this Religious Education unit on Jewish People, Home, and Synagogue, students will explore various aspects of Jewish traditions, beliefs, and practices. They will begin by analysing the significance of Rosh Hashanah, a key Jewish holiday, before moving on to identify the importance of Sukkot. Students will also learn about Jewish practices, including what Jewish people do on a Friday night and why these customs are meaningful. The unit will further focus on the Torah as a sacred book for Jewish people, and how Jewish beliefs are expressed through practices at the synagogue. By the end of the unit, students will have gained a deeper understanding of Jewish traditions and the role these customs play in the lives of Jewish individuals and communities.

PSHE

Year 3 pupils will explore  the Dreams and Goals unit this half term, based on the Jigsaw Scheme of Work for Year 3, students will explore the concept of personal goals and how to achieve them. They will begin by identifying their dreams and aspirations, both short-term and long-term. Students will then learn about the importance of setting realistic goals and the steps they can take to achieve them. Throughout the unit, they will also focus on overcoming challenges and learning from mistakes, as well as how to celebrate their achievements. By the end of the unit, students will have developed a deeper understanding of personal growth, perseverance, and how to stay motivated in working toward their dreams and goals.

Computing

Year 3 pupils will delve into the Sequencing Sounds computing unit, where they will explore a new programming environment. They will learn how commands lead to specific outcomes and that every program has a start. Pupils will recognize the importance of the order of commands in a sequence and how it affects the result. As they progress, they will experiment with changing the appearance of their projects and will create their own projects based on a task description. By the end of the unit, pupils will have developed key skills in programming and sequencing, gaining a better understanding of how to use technology creatively.
