Autumn 2: Valley of the Pharaohs
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will engage in a variety of exciting learning experiences across different subjects. In English, they will investigate the mystery of "Who killed Tutankhamun?" through predictions, summarising events, and exploring character thoughts and feelings. They will also enhance their writing skills by crafting informal letters, diary entries as Howard Carter, and instructional texts on mummification. In Maths, students will focus on strengthening their multiplication and division skills, particularly with the 8-times table, and explore fractions. In Science, they will conduct hands-on investigations to explore concepts like friction and the changes in rocks over time. History lessons will take them back to Ancient Egypt, where they will learn about daily life, Tutankhamun’s tomb, and the importance of artefacts. In Art, they will design and create pneumatic toys inspired by Egyptian beasts. Pupils will also explore Stop Frame Animation in Computing, developing their skills to create their own animations. In Religious Education, they will explore the role of light in various religious festivals, and in PSHE, they will learn about diversity, kindness, and the impact of bullying. This term promises to be an engaging and enriching one, with students gaining valuable skills and knowledge across a range of subjects.
English
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be investigating Who killed Tutankhamun? by making predictions, retrieving key information, and summarising events. They will explore character thoughts and feelings, write informal letters, diary entries as Howard Carter, and instructional texts on mummification. Throughout the term, they will focus on improving their sentence structure by using subordinating conjunctions, imperative verbs, and inverted commas for direct speech.
In reading, Year 3 pupils will be developing their comprehension skills by making predictions, inferring meaning, and summarising key events. They will also practise retrieving information from texts and using their knowledge of other texts and the world to deepen their understanding.
Maths
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be strengthening their multiplication and division skills, focusing on the 8-times table and applying it to solve word problems. They will also be introduced to fractions, learning to count in tenths, recognise unit fractions, and find fractions of a set of objects. Through problem-solving activities, they will develop confidence in applying their mathematical understanding to real-life contexts.
Science
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be taking part in hands-on investigations to explore scientific concepts. They will examine how friction works, conduct experiments to observe how rocks change over time, and carry out independent inquiries to test their ideas. By making observations, recording results, and drawing conclusions, they will develop essential scientific enquiry skills.
History
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be exploring the wonders of Ancient Egypt as part of their Valley of the Pharaohs topic. They will learn how the Egyptian landscape influenced daily life, study the incredible discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter, and investigate how artefacts help us understand the past. They will also compare life in Ancient Egypt with modern-day UK, recognising the similarities and differences between the two.
Art
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be designing and creating pneumatic toys based on Egyptian beasts and monsters. They will experiment with pneumatics, using air pressure to create movement, and apply a variety of technical skills to build their models. At the end of the project, they will evaluate their finished products, reflecting on their successes and areas for improvement.
Computing
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be exploring Stop Frame Animation, learning how a series of images can create movement. They will plan, develop, and refine their own animations while ensuring consistency in their sequences. They will also experiment with adding other media to enhance their final animations.
RE
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be discovering how light is used as a powerful symbol in different religions as part of their Festivals of Light topic. They will explore the significance of Diwali for Hindus, the role of light in Christian celebrations, and how Jewish people use light in Hanukkah. Pupils will reflect on the meaning of light in their own lives and discuss its relevance in modern society.
PSHE
This half-term, Year 3 pupils will be learning about diversity, inclusion, and the importance of kindness through their Celebrating Differences unit. They will explore how every family is unique, discuss the causes and effects of conflict, and examine the impact of bullying. Role-play and class discussions will help them understand how bystanders can influence situations and how words can be used positively. Pupils will also take part in activities for Children in Need, reinforcing the value of helping others.
